SANTA ROSA, CA - One of our most important goals is to educate people how DRiWATER can be used to grow food to combat hunger. While there is not one single issue that perpetuates the devastation of world hunger, lack of adequate water supplies certainly plays a major role. Meeting the growing challenge of water scarcity around the world requires an intelligent use of water. To illustrate DRiWATER's effectiveness for growing food, we are pleased to report the results from our 2003 garden. It was planted in May and produced through November. This year proved to be an excellent growing year with slightly warmer conditions than usual in Sonoma County California. Only one inch of rainfall fell in May and only ¼ of an inch fell after that. Here are a few highlights of this very dry growing season: 1,035 pounds (more than ½ of a ton) of fruit and vegetables were grown using DRiWATER. Only 2,000 square feet of land was used which translates to an equivalent production of 22,549 pounds of fruit and vegetables per acre. • Water savings reached well over 10,000 gallons by using DRiWATER and occasional supplemental water instead of conventional irrigation alone. Eleven varieties of vegetables were harvested including tomatoes, potatoes, zucchini, green beans, cucumbers, swiss chard, eggplant, sweet corn, peppers, yellow squash and a variety of herbs. • The bounty was shared by employee's families, local food banks and food kitchens. Humanitarian Efforts DRiWATER continues to provide humanitarian activities by donating DRiWATER to organizations such as the Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos Orphanage in Honduras. After years of drought and a 2003 crop totaling ¼ of the normal crop the children will now have a water source to grow food that they otherwise would not have. Back to Home |
